If you’re holding a destination wedding overseas there are several things to consider about your choice of wedding dress that you wouldn’t normally have to think about at home.

Now, if you’re heading to a 5* resort then you’ll have pretty much all the facilities as home and all you’ll want to think about is whether you’re having an indoor or an outdoor wedding.  If you’re looking to have a lower budget boutique-style wedding then there are a few more considerations.

Wedding Dress Design

If you’re getting married in the tropics it’s going to be hot and possibly very humid.  What’s more, the heaviest rain shower in the world can appear and disappear within a matter of 20 minutes. Consider the following things:

1)  What length of dress is most appropriate.  Are you getting married on a beach, grass, inside?  If it rains and you get splashed with dust it’s much easier to rinse of a bare leg than a white dress!  Will you change before the evening celebrations or will you want to dance in your dress?  Unless you’re getting married inside a train is not an ideal choice.  Tea length dresses, like the one shown at the top of this page by Matthew CCasual-Short-Wedding-Dresses-Beachhristopher might be a good choice.

2)  Do you want sleeves or a covered top?  Whatever the style of your dress make sure you sunbathe with the exact same style of bikini before the day, otherwise you’re going to have to be clever with make up and tan lines.  It’s going to be hot and you will probably sweat (unless you’re in air-conditioning the entire time) so what will allow you to keep as cool as possible?

3)  What material is appropriate?  Well this is really up to you, the only reason we mention it is that if a wind is blowing and you’re in a shorter dress you want to make sure your underwear remains out of view 🙂  Also consider whether you’ll be able to get your dress dry cleaned after you get off the flight or whether you’re going to need an iron.

4)  If you’re going strapless, most of us need some structure around the torso to carry this off.  Think about this.  If you’re in a tight corset-style dress in the hot weather, you’re going to REALLY feel the heat and you may spend more time wishing you could breathe and drinking water than you do enjoying your day.  Also, if you’re in a humid environment and you have a dress with a lace up back it will give and stretch more quickly in than in cold environment.  So, you’ll either have to have a host of bridesmaids on ‘boob alert’ or your hubby on hand to tighten you up throughout the day.

Make or Buy Before or When You Get There?

The key consideration here is does my dress fit me properly?  If you’re fitting your dress in a cold climate make sure the dress is perfectly fitting as it will be a bit tighter when you expand a little in the heat!

If you’re having your dress made then get advice from the designer/dressmaker about the climate you’re getting married in.  Also ask for detailed instructions on dress care after you land.  Most air hostesses will treat your dress like a precious stone if you tell them to hold it during the flight.  My mum brought mine on Emirates and it was pristine when she landed.

If you’re on a budget there are so may options to get a lovely dress at a low price online.  On this site you can get a wedding dress for less than $100 USD (check it out).  Just make sure that you time the delivery right so that you have enough time to check the fit before you travel.  I bought my dress online and when it arrived it needed quite a few tweaks in the local dress shop.

If you’re a last minute kinda gal and you don’t get easily stressed, you can often have a beautiful dress made, for a small sum, in 2 or 3 days when you land in your destination.  Just remember, use a tailor someone else has used and recommends and make sure you’re on hand for fitting time and regular design checks.

Whatever you decide, remember that a wedding day can be long and you want to feel comfortable, feminine and absolutely beautiful.
